Use Social Media Responsibly

WESTBURY YOUTH CENTRE

Editors: Ashleigh Kater &Fellyn Collins

The world has turned digital and a large aspect of this is social media. Social media is a way to connect with different people from different backgrounds using platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, WordPress, and other online forums. It is a platform used for online storytelling, advertising, sharing ideas and creating an online identity. Although social media can be regarded in a negative light, we believe that, if used responsibly, it can be beneficial to members of our community.

Previously, in the media, Westbury as a community was associated with gang-violence and drug abuse. In more recent times, members of the community have been using social media to tell more positive stories about the positive role models in the community and the potential of Westbury as a whole. This has contributed to a changing perception of…

You can have anything you want if,that’s if you want it desperately
enough.

You must want it with an excuberance that erupts through the skin and join the energy that created the world. One can never consent to creep when he/she feel an impulse or soar.

Life is a great big canvas, throw all the paint on it.You can wake up with a smile and go after life, live it, enjoy it,taste it,smell and feel it.
Love bravely, live bravely.Be courageous ,There’s really nothing to lose.

Every wrong you can make right again, far away in the sunshine, there are highest aspiration we may not reach them but we can look up and see their beauty, believe in them. What other reason could there be for getting up in the morning except to set yourself free if you obey all the rules you miss all the fun in life.

Within each person,lies a potential…

Rejection May Lead To Failure

WESTBURY YOUTH CENTRE

Author: Phakeme Ngubane

Editor:  James Seetelo

In most cases, people fail because of rejection which they get from people they trust the most.

There are times Whereby things don’t come or go your way, then you seek help from people you know, only to find out that you are wasting your own time as people tend to make fun out of your situation, instead of helping you.

These are the main forces that drives an individual to end  up doing negative things in the Community, because you are on your own.

There’s no shoulder to cry on,and at the end of the day you must Eat,Dress Properly,Have Money and other personal issues that an Individual face in their daily lives.

Basically my point is that the are people out there who fail because of Rejection, sometimes they are dying inside their Souls due to rejection and neglection, particularly those who reject or neglect others are not…

Drivers, remember this

This vs that

I stood there in the middle of a busy road, hooters blaring, lights along with my life flashing right before me, fear gluing my feet to the ground. The day I, as an innocent pedestrian, could hear the pearly gates opening.
This is a torturous experience that I’m certain countless pedestrians endure daily.
When my friend and I crossed the road, not a car was in sight. I don’t know how a speeding taxi suddenly appeared, threatening my life. I found myself staring at the oncoming maniac uncertain of my fate. I heard the dread in my friend’s voice as she tried to call me back to the moment, urging me to run out of the way of danger. I couldn’t, at that time, make sense of anything until she hastily tugged my arm, taking me to safety. Seconds later screeching tyres and a gush of wind created by the…

Kiitos Kaisa Osola And Matias Harju!

A year ago,i was introduced to Matias Harju and Kaisa Osola from Helsinki in Finland.I spent time Communicating with them on Skype and Email with my colleagues from the Westbury Youth Centre and i was asked to liaise with them since i am into media as well, listening to them and reading their Mails, something told me that these guys where very passionate about their professions respectively and they had my respect from the word Go.

Our conversations back then in 2014,prior to them coming to South Africa, was about starting/running a radio workshop at the Westbury Youth Centre, free for all our Participants to join and learn the basics of radio.

Now the community where we are located as the Westbury Youth Centre, has previously been regarded as drugs and gang infested hopeless community by mostly media house.Today still, others believe there is no Life in this community.Articles that leaves a bitter taste in one’s mouth continue to make news headlines, no one argues that we have a drug challenge in Westbury, but so is the situation in other communities even outside of South Africa.

We do not ask of the media to turn a blind eye on the negative stories that they see in our community, but how about they publish/broadcast all the positive ones as well?.I have been part of this community for the past eight years and i know there are a lot of untold positive stories about and by us.

This piece of writing however, is just to thank Kaisa Osola and Matias Harju, who left their homes and jobs back in Helsinki Finland, since September 2014, to come and help us make a difference in South Africa, Johannesburg, Gauteng, particularly in Westbury at the Westbury Youth Centre.

They have shown us the true meaning of Ubuntu, the spirit of giving without expecting compensation.

Professionally Matias Harju being a lecturer in music and teacher in sound engineering, while Kaisa Osola is a teacher in media, speech communication and speech art back in their country, they have added real value to our Organisation.

We are talking about professionals here, who saw the need to come and help young people in a foreign country to realize their dreams or to simply equip themselves with skills that will make them employable, some of these young people come from Townships, Informal settlements and Rural areas. They Could not afford to study further although they had dreams to venture into the media industry, and by being part of the Westbury Youth Centre and being skilled by these two Facilitators, their dreams are becoming a reality.

Kaisa and Matias managed to introduce our Youth to those big media houses,to also take the same media houses out of their comfort zones and show them where they are really needed, how they can help young people grow and become great global citizens, instead of crashing their dreams.

It’s evident what kaisa and Matias have brought to our community, check this blog: http://www.friendsofwycradio.wordpress.com or listen to their students’s materials here http://www.soundcloud.com/wycradio ,Follow @WYCRadio and get more information about WYC Radio.

As James Seetelo, perhaps i have at times been a real pain in a neck because i didn’t understand the pace that You guys move at, but i have learnt that time to you is indeed an important factor, as it should be for everyone no matter from which Continent or Country they are.You have been great colleagues, easy going and i will sure miss having you around.

Thank you for all those great memories you are leaving me with here in South Africa,Hankkia eheä astua harhaan taaksepäin koti- !
